AI Builders
GPT-5.6 Sol (OpenAI)

Greg Brockman (OpenAI)

Matt Shumer (Hebbia)

Peter Yang (Notion)

Guillermo Rauch (Vercel)

swyx (swyx)

Garry Tan (Y Combinator)

Cognition SWE-1.7

Peter Yang (Notion)

AI Builders Daily — 07-08
Tracking the people actually building in AI, not the ones just talking about it.
Today's Thoughts
The biggest signal today is OpenAI dropping two releases simultaneously: GPT-5.6 Sol launching Thursday and GPT-Live, a next-gen voice model, going live in ChatGPT today. Sam Altman said he always preferred typing over talking to AI—and now he thinks that's about to change. If voice becomes the dominant interaction pattern, it's a fundamental reset of how AI products are designed.
The Sol vs. Fable race is the other story. Matt Shumer's early access testing shows Fable outperforms Sol on almost every task and is more agentic—one Fable turn does what takes multiple Sol turns. That contrasts with Ethan Mollick's take that both "represent jumps" and "opened a large gap." There's a gap, all right. The question is who's leading it.
Products & Launches
GPT-5.6 Sol (OpenAI)
Sam Altman confirmed GPT-5.6 Sol launches Thursday alongside Terra and Luna, with preview access expanding globally. Greg Brockman shared his hands-on experience using Sol for Next.js development: it understands architecture tradeoffs, investigates complex issue reports, considers other parts of the codebase when fixing bugs, and needs very little human intervention.

GPT-Live (OpenAI)
Altman announced GPT-Live going live in ChatGPT today, calling it "magical and real." Greg Brockman added: GPT-Live is intelligent voice AI that feels like a natural conversation, and the team is still scratching the surface of what's possible. API and Codex integration are in the works.

Takes & Opinions
Greg Brockman (OpenAI)
GPT-5.6 Sol is incredibly good for day-to-day Next.js work. It understands architecture tradeoffs, investigates complex issue reports, considers other areas of the codebase when fixing bugs, and needs very little human intervention.
x.com
Matt Shumer (Hebbia)
GPT-5.6 Sol is an amazing model, but on almost every task tested, Fable was quite a bit better—and more agentic. One Fable turn does the same thing many 5.6 turns do.

Peter Yang (Notion)
Early access to GPT-5.6 Sol: "pretty great, arguably even better than GTA 5." Also looking to interview an AI-native designer on building with design.md and components vs. the typical process.

Guillermo Rauch (Vercel)
The agent stack is clicking together beautifully—this will power his personal productivity agents.

swyx (swyx)
Most agent labs are shy about acknowledging Chinese model use because they need to sell to gov/defense. The Cognition team actually did the hard part: built a multilingual propaganda & censorship eval, corrected it in posttraining, and serves at 1000 tok/s cheaply.

Taylor Blau joined OpenAI today to work on SCM tools.

Garry Tan (Y Combinator)
Without building housing, San Francisco will turn a mega economic W into the biggest L in civic history.

The SF Board of Supervisors voted to put a public bank on the November ballot. Garry calls it a grift mill staffed by Jackie Fielder's cronies that will rob the city blind.

Tech Developments
Cognition SWE-1.7
Cognition's SWE-1.7 is their most capable model yet, scoring within a few points of the strongest frontier models at a fraction of the cost, now available at 1000 tok/s. RL is not hitting its limit—after refining the recipe, they keep seeing gains as they scale.
