PG buying domains for random S26 companies is the most PG thing I’ve ever seen

Talked to startups at YC for 7 hours straight. I think that's about the limit. I didn't quite saturate demand, but I got within about 20 founders of it.

Dinner with PG today! Here are some things I learned:
1. 10% week on week growth is the most important target. if you can sustain it, it’s hard to fail and narrows the problem (also helps you ignore everything that doesn’t move this growth rate)
2. Many great companies have a second growth surge years in, which is the “second wind phenomenon”. You can’t predict it, but you just have to be there & be committed when it arrives
3. You’re naturally formidable on topics you know deeply. Steer conversations to your domain expertise and it makes you formidable!

Apps built on Lovable now get 900M visits every month, and we’ve quadrupled ARR in the last 12 months.

@garrytan : If an AI workflow is useful, turn it into a repeatable system.
@patrickc : Keep the important ideas in your head, not only in your tools.
@alexandr_wang : As intelligence gets cheaper, ambition matters more.
@sama : Help good people before you need anything from them.
@JensenHuang : When reality proves the plan wrong, change the plan.
None of these is a shortcut.
They are habits that make a company faster and harder to break.

Just got off the phone with an early Anthropic investor.
The situation seems worse than I thought. Morale with investors and employees are at an all time low. Anger is rising at the more and more doctoral leadership that is now isolated.
They asked for my advice and opinion on how they survive as an independent company.
We talked about the cult they tried to hold on to as the company grew and they had no idea how bad the belief system was inside the core group.
I warned them before they invested. What’s really changed is kids grow up and get married and have kids. They mature their political and philosophical views, many leave the cult-like thinking they had as a collage kid. This maturity and new hires that don’t buy into the cult have built a hidden communication system to vent their anger over the increasingly hostile upper priest class.
I had them make connections to engineers that work there for more insights. Many feel stuck between losing the equity they built and mental health of the cult.
I hate to see this and believe Dario means well in his own mind but unfortunately has not thought out how the real world works. And money has insulted him from anyone that could reach him.
It is unfortunately a story as old as time.
This is one of the premier AI companies and they are flaming out. It is not good for anyone other than countries that want to see the US fail.
The investor conceded I was right about how the philosophy these folks held would be their undoing when they asked long ago.
I pray for a good outcome for all.

It has all the features Swyx and the team asked for. I didn't want it to look like a POC or throwaway code, so this has a real domain, the email features actually work, we have dev, staging, and prod environments. None of this could be done, this quickly, without AI as a partner during the build process.

The “covered up” data was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2021, where it has sat, publicly, for five years. It shows vaccinated women miscarried at the same rate as everyone else, about 1 in 8. The 82% figure comes from a denominator error: it counts only pregnancies that had already ended, months into a nine-month process, which at that point meant mostly the losses. The healthy pregnancies were still ongoing. A cover-up conducted by publication in the world’s most-read medical journal is a genuinely novel approach.

I can't blame regular, every day folks from being scared or angry about AI.
Too many AI execs were out there shouting about how AI would take all the jobs, eat your children, and kill your puppies.
If I heard that as I regular person, I'd go, "Uh, WTF? No way, we don't want that! How do we stop that?"
There are also actual lunatics whose job it is to scare them. They get paid to write books and go on podcasts and the news and talk crazy town about AI killing us all and how only mass authoritarianism can save them.
In any other time before social media they would be confined to the lunatic fringe. But today, any crazy train can get 1M followers.
Unfortunately, what regular people are worried about with AI is not grounded in reality. They've been terrified by scary bedtime stories by highly neurodivergent folks who read too much sci-fi and thought it was a documentary or who are just hallucinating like Tim Leary on a bad bender that they're rational when they're totally irrational.
Let's be clear, there are real fears about AI. But they're not the ones anyone is talking about. They are:
Mass surveillance and war.
Not one thing is being done about either and it will not be because government will always reserve the right to do both and will never restrict themselves on either front. Full stop.
Or how about, privacy?
Nothing being done about it.
Talk to your AI about your pending divorce and watch it show up in court. We are going in the opposite direction and people are cheering it on like it's a good thing.
When you see the complaints about AI, they make no sense because they make no sense at the surface level. They are nonsense arguments but you can't understand those arguments based on the content of the argument. You have to understand that it is a deeper fear that is rising from the well and the person has no context or compass to express it clearly and rationality so they come up with something, anything, to express that fear, even if it makes no sense.
In essence, all they are saying is: "I'm scared and I don't like this."
The actual complaints are not tethered to reality. But they are real emotions.
And that fear was created by an astroturfed info war campaign, deeper fears about powerful people and big business and the very things people in the industry said coming back to haunt them like chickens coming home to roost.
It's irrational. But it makes sense. It's understandable.
We've got to do much better as an industry and show people a powerful and positive future.
Nobody riots against a future they can see themselves in.
We've got to show them a better one.

Key lessons I learned from @paulg yesterday:
1. Grow 10 percent a week. If you optimize for growth, growth designs the product. Users tell you what to build next.
2. The growth rate is a decision filter. If code is not the limiting factor, stop writing software and go sell.
3. Fundraising is not winning. Money from customers is. A valuation is a prediction of future customer revenue.
4. Believe the no, not the why. Rejection reasons are breakup lines.
5. If everything else fails, keep a small group of users happy. Hang on to that like a rope in a hurricane.

I wrote Nothing Left to force liberals and progressives to reckon with destructive ideas they promoted around race, gender and identity. This week a lot of politicians and pundits are running away from “Woke 1,” but still close to none have engaged publicly with the book.
Disappointing—as I list names, organizations, and people directly involved. Who are still active. I’ve received countless messages from operatives who are telling me it’s still happening. In all wings of the party.
If they were serious about change they would at least engage with my book, but they aren’t.

i've always enjoyed reading about the dot com era and its direct aftermath. it's a great reminder that tech cycles are long, unpredictable, and full of troughs of disillusionment before things that feel "inevitable" ever really come to pass. it's particularly funny to think about the crop of stanford kids graduating in '01-'05 (which includes a list of guys like balaji, stephen cohen, joe lonsdale, temporarily sam altman, and ofc garry tan) who started out when most people thought tech was deeply uncool and perhaps even completely over.
so i really love the way this pod begins - with @garrytan recounting what it was like graduating in '03, taking a job at microsoft because it was the practical thing for a young guy with student loans to do, turning down an early offer at palantir (which he eventually did accept as employee #10) then heading deeper into the world of startups and yc.
this podcast hosted by anish (@illscience) is actually a great study in how to get ever-closer to yourself and trusting your gut. there's also (this being anish and garry) a lot about building very useful ai products and living 3-5 (or in garry's case 20) years in the future.
doing what you instinctively know is right, being unhedged, being earnest, or in garry's words, not LARPing, isn't the fastest but it's undoubtedly the best path toward actually having an impact. this conversation is basically an instruction manual in how to do that in all areas of life - from career decisions, to building, to local politics (we probably have garry and a handful of other people to thank for the fact that sf is now a nicer city to live in than nyc).

The best part about @garrytan is that he exemplifies the best of Silicon Valley - earnestness, courage, curiosity - all while shipping like a mad man.
We share a similar view that people are insufficiently optimistic about how good it can all be - humans went from having a context window of 7 things to millions, products will be 1000x better than ever before, and companies will be stripped of the soul draining bureaucratic morass that everyone took as a given.
The cool thing about this moment is that the model native generation who are 18-22 are busy designing the world we will all live in 20 years from now. I can’t wait to see it looks likes when they are in charge.
